Front of House Training SOPs That Improve Guest Experience

Standardize your service sequence, greeting protocols, and table management with proven front-of-house SOPs.

Your front-of-house team is the face of your restaurant. Guests form their opinion within the first 60 seconds of arrival. These SOPs ensure every interaction meets your standard.

The Greeting Sequence

Document exactly what happens when a guest arrives:

  1. Acknowledge within 30 seconds — eye contact and a smile, even when busy
  2. Welcome by name if possible; always welcome warmly
  3. Offer to take coats or direct to seating
  4. Present menus within one minute of seating
  5. Offer water and mention daily specials

Table Service Flow

Create a step-by-step service sequence for your concept:

  • Order taking: Position at the table, suggest items, confirm modifications, repeat the order back
  • Beverage service: Water refills before they're empty, cocktails within three minutes
  • Food delivery: Announce each dish, check back within two bites
  • Course timing: Clear plates before next course, never rush or drag
  • Check presentation: Offer dessert and coffee, present check promptly when requested

Handling Complaints

Train staff on the LAST method: Listen, Apologize, Solve, Thank. Empower servers to resolve minor issues on the spot without manager approval.

Side Work Standards

Define opening, mid-shift, and closing side work for each position. Include table setup specs, stocking levels, and cleanliness standards. Side work SOPs prevent the "that's not my job" mentality.

Pre-Shift Meetings

Run a 10-minute pre-shift huddle covering reservations, 86'd items, specials, and one training focus. Consistency in pre-shift meetings creates consistency on the floor.

When your FOH team knows exactly what's expected, they focus on hospitality instead of guessing — and your guest reviews reflect it.
